Sodbury 800 Medieval Weekend

The Ridings, Chipping Sodbury

On 12th August in 1218 King Henry III granted a Royal Market Charter to the Lord of the Manor of Sodbury, who lived in a long gone manor house by Old Sodbury Church, to build a Market Place. This is the day Chipping Sodbury was born.

To mark this unusual anniversary, Sodbury Town Council, in conjunction with local community groups has decided to turn the Town Medieval for the weekend of 11/12 August 2018.

A tented town will be built on The Ridings, Wickwar Road, Chipping Sodbury and life of 800 years ago relived with re-enactors giving demonstrations of long forgotten skills and trades such as shield making & candle making; a canteen will be built showing how to prepare and cook food of the period; “quack” doctors and herbalists will show how little they knew of medicine; weapon making workshops; archery experts; Falconers and a Tournament will be staged.

It is a free family event from 10.30 – 4.30 on Saturday & Sunday and on Saturday evening, the celebrations will continue with music, pig roast and a bar, culminating in a grand firework display.

On Sunday, a costumed procession will make its way from The Ridings (at approx. 12.45) and a handing over of the Market Charter will be staged by Sodbury Players in Broad Street.

A Medieval Big Lunch will follow in Broad Street until 6pm and residents invited to bring tables, chairs, gazebos and a picnic and be entertained by local dance groups, jesters, jugglers, maypole dancers and a children’s fancy dress competition – see the Big Lunch feature page to find out more.

This event has been made possible with funding and grants received from various organisations which will be advertised at the event.

Local housebuilder Cotswold Homes Ltd has stepped in to ensure that the Sodbury 800 celebrations go with a bang.

The Yate-based firm has contributed £4,500 to pay for a spectacular firework display and live music at The Ridings playing field and sports ground in Wickwar Road between 6 pm and 9.30 pm.

Music by Chipping Sodbury Folk Band will be followed by newRhythmics, a tribute band which will take the audience on a journey back to the ’eighties, celebrating the work of Eurythmics and Annie Lennox.

Before the fireworks start at 9.30 pm, other performers will include rock musicians, the Liquor and Poker Band, and the Michael Jackson impersonator David Boakes.

Terri Hayes-Pugh, head of sales and marketing at Cotswold Homes – which is about to unveil plans for new homes in Chipping Sodbury, as well as Tytherington and Mangotsfield – said this week:

‘We are delighted to provide sponsorship for such an exciting event. It enables us to give something back to our local community. Many of our partners and purchasers live locally and this really is the heartland for Cotswold Homes.’
