Botanical Drawing Class with Jackie Isard

Badminton Estate

10.30am-4pm

Explore the art and science of botanical illustration as you learn to create accurate drawings of plants and delve into their botanical intricacies. Whether you’re an aspiring artist or a seasoned enthusiast, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to hone your skills led by renowned artist, tutor, and author Jackie Isard (BA Hons), SBA Fellow CBM RHS Gold Medalist.

Botanical illustration is the accurate drawing of plants and plant botany. Many botanical paintings are used as reference for botanists and plant researchers as the paintings help with recognising species. Originally, botanical illustrations were an aid for medicinal and culinary plant identification. Over the centuries, botanical illustrations also identified newly discovered plants. Mary Somerset, 1st Duchess of Beaufort was an avid plant collector and painter of exotic species. Her two-volume florilegium of drawings, by Everard Kickius, will be on display as part of the exhibition A Garden of Botanical Art.

This one day workshop will take place in the Old Hall at Badminton Estate with an opportunity to explore the art exhibition A Garden of Botanical Art in the North Hall at your leisure. You will get to see the reproductions of the florilegium up close as part of your class. Breaks will be factored in but please bring a pack lunch.

What to expect:

Gain insights into botanical features essential for drawing precision
Create detailed sketches or full compositions of your chosen plant
Utilise graphite for line drawings
Access to botanical references and resources
Receive comprehensive course materials for future reference
Optional extension: transition from drawing to painting your botanical masterpiece

Materials will be supplied but if you wish to bring your own cartridge papers, sketch books, H pencils and plants then you are very welcome.
