The Arts Society Lecture: The Art of the Automobile
Chipping Sodbury Town Hall
The Art Deco movement inspired a golden age of car design, including the ‘Great Gatsby era’ when some of the most fabulous cars ever created were produced.
The earliest cars were purely functional and lacked even the most basic of passenger comforts, such as doors or even windscreens to protect passengers from the elements. However, progress was rapid and by the mid-1920s we entered a golden age of automobile design. A new generation of stylish cars were influenced by the art deco movement and the ‘Great Gatsby era’ included some of the most famous and fabulous cars ever built. This period was followed by the Streamline Moderne influenced cars of the 1930s and 40s, with aerodynamic shapes and lots of chrome detailing.
This talk covers some of the most beautiful cars ever built, and focuses on the work of the coachbuilders, who were inspired by the art movements and created ‘mobile works of art’.
A keen and accomplished photographer, Roger Mendham has gained Distinctions from the Royal Photographic Society and is currently the President of the Surrey Photographic Association. His artistic taste is predominantly 20th century and he is particularly interested in the visual aspects of art.
His photography concentrates on shapes, textures and colours and he finds classic cars particularly photogenic. His collection of classic car photographs has been accumulated over a number of years and includes cars from both UK and international events, museums and private collections.
We meet in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall at 10.30 for 11.00 a.m. and 1.30 for 2.00 p.m. Tea and coffee are available half an hour before the lectures.
