One Year- 2 Hours a Week
Are you a woman living in South Glos. wanting to help change somebody's life?
Our befrienders provide specialist trauma-informed support to women who have experienced trauma relating to sexual violence and/or domestic abuse. You will meet your befriendee weekly for one year, providing emotional and practical support, enabling her to manage the challenges she is facing whilst engaging in enjoyable activities.
Becoming a befriender means meeting the woman you are supporting every week for 2 hours for one year. During this time, you will build a relationship by getting out and about, meeting for a coffee or a walk, and fostering trust. While this may seem like a simple ask, your support will have a big impact on her life.
Before you start, you will receive 3.5 Saturdays of in-person training, plus additional home study, to ensure you are well-prepared for the role and have a network of like-minded women for support.
The women we support in our befriending service have experienced trauma relating to sexual violence and domestic abuse and are often very socially isolated. As a befriender, you will provide a safe space for your befriendee to talk about her struggles, model healthy relationships, and help her feel safer in the world. After a year of support, you will have helped a woman become more confident, independent, and expand her social networks.
The befriending role can be challenging and emotionally demanding at times. Therefore, we need befrienders who have adequate life experience and feel emotionally robust and resilient enough to take on the role. We welcome volunteers with personal experience of mental health and other relevant issues but will require you to have at least a one-year period of stability and ideally to have received professional help like counselling in your recovery.
